Affonso built his first database-driven webapp way back in 1995 using wood, bone and antler. The client was a large international magazine whose revenue model banked on actually *selling* online subscriptions. I can only say: it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Over the long 10 years since that initial effort his toolset has evolved a bit and has included, at various times, PHP, Perl, Cold Fusion, ASP, Java and SQL databases.
Thankfully, the revenue models of his clients have also evolved, his latest J2EE project was a complete re-write of the high-load online order processing system used by the Pearl Jam and Cameron Crowe web-sites.
Affonso has taught extensively for the UW, consistently receiving top reviews from his students who, at one point, had imbibed so much CoolAid that they nominated him for a "distinguished instructor" award.
